changing the timing belt on a B230F 200 1990 245 DL

After going over the procedure in the Bentley manual, it states that a Volvo tool 5284 is recommended to hold the crankshaft stationary while loosening and tightening the crankshaft pulley bolt. 𖑏-2]

Is this tool really essential to replace the timing belt?

Can it be accomplished without it?

thanks in advance,
