Idle problems 700 1990

Replaced the idle motor 4/30/01 because the idle became so slow, the car died. Six weeks later, the same thing happened. The mechanic I've used for over three years, found a hole in the vacuum hose. The idle is not as slow, but at certain times speeds up to 900 rpm at a traffic light. When in park it races at nearly 1500 rpm. It doesn't happen all the time, but a little scary when it does. The mechanic is at a loss. Can the new idle motor be bad? What else can he try? He won't look at it until the engine is racing, but every time it does, I'm too far away, or on my way somewhere. The idle returns to normal when the car sits about an hour.

The last time this happened was in Dec, 1997 and had the idle motor replaced then. Volvo dealership didn't know what to do, thats when I went to a foreign car mechanic.

Love the car, 740 GLE Wagon, don't want to get rid of it, but can't continue to drive like this. HELP!
