Demons in the wiring 700 89

It comes and goes but mostly now it's here to stay. The car revs high at idle (1200 rpms) and won't go over 1900 rpms in any gear including neutral. Not that it just won't go, but it pulsates like "vrmm...vrmm...vrmm". There's no systmatic reason why sometimes it runs fine for 100 miles, then starts again. One time you start it and it's broken, next time it's fine. During the time it cuts out I've tested for spark and power to the injectors and all seem constant. Any ideas? I've owned 7 700s over the years and never seen anything like this.
