Stalling at odd times and check engine light 700 1989

This 89 740 manuel trans will stall while running down the road. My wife has noticed the shift arrow in the dash will flash on and off regularly the car will idle rough for a short time then seem to take breath and then relax if it continues to run. At other times she can be at a stop then the car will begin rough idle and when she begins to accelerate the 740 will hesitate. the check engine light came on two days ago. I drove the car home it stalled on an incline. I started it and drove it the remaining two miles home. Since I had no further problems I disconnected the negative battery terminal to allow the check engine light to go off.

The check engine light came on again today. What is up?????????
