Springs 700 1991

I own a 1991 740 SE turbo. Recently I've notice my car is riding damn high like a monster truck. When I was in for service I ask the guy to check the springs for me. He said it's fine, but somehow I hated that riding high look. I want to lower my car for the look and some handling (there isn't many cruving roads.... mostly straight where i live) I went a good shop and they told me it'll be $600 Cdn for a set of springs 'n installation. I mean 600 bux? thats shit load of money for a set of springs. Then one my friend's dad who was a stock car racer also owns many mucsle cars and souping a 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R to compete in SCCA solo. He told me I lower my car 'n improve handling a bit with chopping original springs. I've heard MANY ppl told me how bad it is, but few ppl told me its alrite. I seriously dunno wat to choose, choppin original spring or spend 600 nice smelly dollars on a set of springs.
