on top of ole smoky 200 82

I am having problems with smoke pouring out of my gear selector(automatic) when engaging the starter, this was severe enough that the wiring to the starter solenoid and the boost wire coming up from the solenoid melted together. The starter would latch in and continue to crank from the backfeed as of course the ignition would continue to run with the keyturned off and removed. The immediate solution was to remove the battery cable.

The problem exists that I have a melted spot on the side of the neutral safety switch and backup light switch combination down in the shifter console. It started when a coin fell down the console and still continues to occasionally smoke when cranking the engine even though the wiring short to the starter has been corrected.

Does anyone know of this occurring?
