81 240 DL Starts, but only barely 200 81

Hello everybody. Here is the scenario. I have an '81 Volvo 245 DL that-gasp!-won't start! This morning I lent it to a friend, who mistakenly primed the gas pump before she started the car. The car didn't start, so she kept giving it gas, until the engine probably flooded. I didn't worry too much until I went out a couple of hours later and the car still wouldn't start for more than a few seconds at really high rpms. As soon as she dropped down a notch or two, she would die. Sometimes when I turn her over, right at the start, she makes this kind of popping noise, like a muffled backfire. The car is of course fuel injection. I have heard that pumping the gas on fuel injection engines can make a real mess of things.

There are of course other sides to this that complicate things. I checked for spark, she's got that in spades. She also has enough carbon on the plugs after the third or fourth try to indicate that it is either too rich (rich enough that it won't run at all?), or the spark is too weak to really get it going. The second of those options I am doubtful of. I pulled the plugs right off the bat to be certain that I had enough spark, and it gave me a hell of a jolt with the engine turning.

I have checked to see if there is fuel in the hose at the back of the fuel regulator, there is not.

It happened too suddenly for it to be the auxiliary air valve. Yesterday fine, today ISANOGO.

I think I know what the flame trap is, but I am not certian at all how to check it to see if I am getting excess crankcase pressure and thereby limiting my ability to get any intake. If it is what I am thinking of, (two hoses, one a 1/4 inch, one a 1 inch, both meeting in a "y" plastic connector that sits in a rubber cap, how do I know if this thing is in need of a good cleaning? I did check the place where the 1/4 inch hose meets the manifold, (brass fitting) and sure enough, the brass fitting was about as clogged as could be, but I cleaned it out and did not seem to get any sort of response.

Thank you for any input whatsoever,

Will, Jen, and Betty (the object in question)
