white backing lights not working. HELP!!!!! 200 93

I'm at the end of several months of repairing a salvaged car that was wrecked in the passenger front corner. Everything is ready for safety inspection except for the fact that the backing lights do not work. All the other lights work though. Is there wiring in the shifter I should try to check and if so, how do I get to it and can someone describe it to me? What color is it, what should it be hooked to, how can I check if it is working properly, is there another area I should check? It's the backing lights on both sides, not just one. Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!
