Running Rich? 200 1984

Good evening have an 84 242 GLTi with 164k on it. 2.1 Bft motor with CI injection.

Had alot of problems with the car starting and running, it would

Act like no gas pressure in lines, Crank, start, idle up then die. Went thru this morning ritual every morning but was maintaining 22mpg.

After I went thru this, I would drive a minute or so and the car would basically be pretty much okay, a kind of boggled idle, but it ran out great. It would be fine, but difficult to start after sitting for 30-45 minutes.

Then I replaced the main fuel pump (Other one was screaming, and I figgured since it was 17yo, it should be replaced.) I wasn't expecting this to fix the problem. (Fuel pump it called for at volvo and parts houses were $216.00+, but I had to eventually pull it off and match it up, and it cost me $76.00. (Still can't explain why, it was so different.)

Well, I figured since I replaced that one, I would replace the pump in the tank. I did this and thought well since all is okay in the fuel system Supposedly, i would get it fixed alltogether, (Starting etc.) Being in Louisiana there is a minimal number of VOlvo Service dealers, and/or repair facilities (SW LA). I took it to the "Ace Volvo Mechanic" in these parts where all volvo owners take their vehicles.

After getting it back for a nominal fee, the car seemingly ran great!! he had to adjust the Idle/Air control mixture. To celebrate I drove to a decent restaurant (60 miles away). Well, When I came home I noticed that I had a cloud of black smoke (Fuel) behind me when I idled around or even in town. I used the entire tank of gas (it was full) on the trip there and back. I filled up and my mileage dropped to 14mpg!! I called the mechanic and he stated that he wondered about that since he says the Fuel Distributor cannot hold the setting. He stated in a nutshell that I am going to have to probably replace it for $600+.

He stated that cleaned it and adjusted it. I know this can and is feasible seeing how I have had the car 11 years and haven't put 60K on it. (Actually teh past 3 hasn't had 10K put on it, (Bought a 98 S70 and sold it) So, after getting home, I pulled out the air filter and cleaned allt he gummed gas on the bottom of the Air sensor and cleaned the Air Filter (K&N). This morning, it started fine, but it still has a black cloud trailing it.

My question (Sorry so winded), is there any specific way to test this? I have the Bentley, Haynes, and Chilton's manual and they say just replace the distributor. Is there anyway to adjust the A/F mixture without a O2 guage?

What tests further can I perform? Hard to believe that oen can take it in, getting 22mpg running badly, but get it back running seemingly good and get 14mpg? i am trying to get this done prior to leaving on vacation to Oklahoma City, otherwise I will have to take and drop it off at a volvo dealer and let them rape me like normal. I would like to think that there is something I missed, I have checked all the Vacuum hoses etc. no leaks that I can find.

Thank you once again in advance for your assistance.

David
