Or maybe you can just replace the clutch assembly on the front of the compresser, which would be less expensive and you wouldn't have to discharge/recharge the system.

About the steering - Is the belt good and snug? The scronny little bolts that are used to snug-up the belts have a way of breaking. Fluid level OK? Let's see, could something have happened that would have caused both of your problems at the same time? Look it all over real good.
