Spray some penetrating-type lubricant on the steering universal joints. The lower one is easy to see, but the upper one is kind of under the brake booster and you have to spray at a weird angle. That's for left hand drive cars.

That's about the age when the steering starts to get really hard--doesn't want to return to center, etc.
