Howdy,
1990 740 wagon, wife's car.
I hit the brakes around 70 mph and the steering wheel shakes momentarily like "a dawg passing a peach pit" (a little southern vernacular, there).
The vibrations stop once I hit 50 mph, so probably not rotor warping. I used a dial indicator to check runout on the brake rotors, anyway. Fronts are .001 - .002 inches and the backs were a max of .003 inches. Volvo specs are a max of .004, so the problem doesn't seem to be there.
But wait! Isn't this a classic symptom of bad radius arm bushings? Previous owner had them replaced with the upgraded units from Volvo. I pulled the nuts and washers off last night and the bushings look brand new. With the car up on blocks, I wrestled the radius arms with whatever strength my puny arms could muster. They didn't move a lick. Ok, probably not the radius arms.
Passenger side inner tie rod is shot. I've got about a 1/16" of movement in the ball joint. I'll be replacing it. The cover is cracked on the passenger side ball joint as well. I'm going to stick a crowbar on it and check for movement there.
Has anyone had experience with braking vibration caused by a worn inner tie rod/ball joint before? Anything I might be missing?
Thanks y'all
Bob Mohr
