I like the design of the overflow tanks found in
the later volvos. As far as I can tell, the only
modifications I would need to make to use one on
my 164 would be to find a place to mount it on
the fender (no problem, really) and to put a hole
in the bottom part of the radiator for the lower
hose to mount. A drill, a brass fitting, and some
solder ought to take care of that part.
There may be a couple problems -- the relief
caps may be the wrong pressure for a 164, though
I've had my radiator and hoses tested to a pretty
high pressure (the shop said that it was actually
about as high as modern cars run, and he was a
bit surprised that it didn't leak) and it could
have the wrong dimensions causing it to overflow
when the system pressurizes.
At the moment, I have a 140 overflow tank with
the correct cap and I also have a 164 overflow
but no correct cap and the tank is kind of
cracked in a couple places with JB weld repairs.
The 140 tank is too small when the car is
working hard, but otherwise keeps the system
pressurized. I could get a replacement 164
tank but the later 240 tanks seem like a real
improvement. Plus, it seems like I'd have an
easier time finding replacement parts later if
I need them.
Opinions?
