Squealing at startup, could it be p/s pump? 700 1992

Our 745 is squealing at startup and other intervals. It is getting to the point that it is embarrassing so I did some diagnostic work today. Initial thought was it was the belt on power steering. But I dont believe that is it after checking it out. I am thinking it is a bad power steering pump because you can create the squeal by putting pressure on the pump- turned the wheel slightly while parked and it starts squealing. Also squeals when you turn it all the way. It is hard to determine exactly the source of the sound (used the pipe stethscope method) but does not sound like a belt. Any expert advice before I purchase a new pump. I could not find much in the archives about p/s pumps. Is it common for p/s pumps to fail and how hard is it to replace?
