Help, check engine light on how do I find problem 700 1989

this is my wifes car. It stalled on her while climbing a small hill. The check engine light came on and would not start. After waiting a short while the car started. The engine idled rough for awhile then shuttered as if taking a breath and smoothed out. The check engine light was still on so I disconnected the negative battery terminal. The light went out. It seemed to run fine for two days then started the same stuff and the check engine light came on again.

I tried to buy the Haynes on this year but they did not even put one in print for this car.
