Wiring Harness Repair Job 200 1986

I didn't have the funds to pay 850.00 for a new wiring harness. I took it to a mechanic who repaired it. Then today, I had new brakes put on my car and the mechanic tried to convince me that my wiring harness repair was not going to last and I should get a brand new on. My car is running fine. I'm thinking, hey if it aint broke, don't fix it. He told me that a new wiring harness will last only 5-6 years. There is NO way in the world I'm going to pay 850.00 every 5-6 years. What is up with this?
