Update on my "clunking" steering rack and how long to change one? 700 1988

hey all,

I've finally had the problem diagnosed with my volvos clunking steering, it appears that the rack itself is worn, the guy at the suspension/steering place reckons in his life he has NEVER seen a rack quite so worn on a car.....mine only has 203,000k's on it, it is a "cam" rack....it has a large amount of movement in the main steering bar thingy inside the rack, it is internal to the rack, so a remanurfactured one is the only choice....one guy quoted 645 aussie dollars (506 for rack, 99 for labour (at 1.5 hours) and 40 for wheel alignment) and he reckons about 1.5 - 2 hours labour, whereas another place quoted at least 4-5 hours....is someone pulling my leg here?????For 1.5 hours, i'd get someone else to do it, but not for 4-5....Has anyone else had a dealer do it??

Just for a laugh for you US guys, volvo here couldn't give an exact price, but they did say that it'd cost nearly $4000 for a *new* rack for my car, which, to tell you the truth, i found to be a complete and utter joke!!!

TIA!!!

Az
