A/C compressor won't engage 900 92

The a/c compressor in my 92 940 (8 valve) wouldn't engage this afternoon. I've noticed over the past couple months (on rare occasion), warm air through the vents, but it always seemed to clear up. Yesterday, when we picked the car up from the airport, the a/c worked great. This morning, it worked fine as well. However, around noon (dallas heat), nothing.

I'm guessing I'm just low on r-12, as I've had to have the system boosted about every two years. But would a low charge shut down the compressor? BTW, I belive the compressor and the rest of the a/c system is original (136k). Is there any way I can check the compressor?
