Timing change helped carb backfire. 444-544 1961

Thanks,

With the advice of the people on this board I got my B16 rolling strong again. I attempted to use a timing light to set the timing, but it was very difficult to see the markings on the flywheel (had to hook up the timing light to a 12 volt car to get enough light to see anything at all).

So giving up on that I just turned my distributor a little (maybe 10 - 20 degrees counter clockwise) and the engine instantly started to run a bit faster and much smoother. I tightened it up and put a 11mm wrench in my pocket and headed out to test the new setting. I couldn't get it to ping or backfire through the carbs. The engine didn't get as hot, but I am not sure if that was due to the timing or the cool weather.

Now I will try to tweak it a little more and then retune the carbs.

Thanks again, now I can get out on SF bay again for some stripers and sturgeon. Here's a picture of the old wagon loaded up at China Camp on Saturday. Thanks!!
