It sounds like your clutch is out of adjustment. If it cannot travel fully, it will slip. On the other hand, if it is out of adjustment and slipping, it will wear out. If you have a leaky rear main seal, it will slip and become roont also.

Look for oil dripping out of the bottom of the bell housing. Adjust the cable (assuming yours is cable actuated and not hydraulic).

If you lead a charmed life, adjustment will cure it. If the universe has your number, you will do a clutch job with a rear seal replacement.

Can't advise on tougher clutches, as the one that came with my car stood up to whatever the teenage driver and I could do to it.
