It sounds a lot like the vacuum hose to the flame trap is loose or cracked.

Either that or the intake hose has a big crack in it somewhere. It sounds more like that than an idle air control problem, but that could be it too. Heck, check them all out.

Just talked to a guy whose car was dying at every toll gate and stoplight, but would run otherwise (not perfectly, but it ran). Finally the guy leaves for work one morning and the car takes a dump three blocks from his house.

The thing comes in on the hook, and the problem: Some quick-lube genius pulled the intake hose off to get the air filter out, then never tightened the hose clamp. Eventually the thing fell off when he hit a bump. Towing $50, repair $0.
