fan thermoswitch??? 700 1990

Recently I had the radiator replaced in my 1990 740. Yesterday, sensor which attaches to the engine side of the radiator came off and spewed copious amounts of coolant onto the road. On inspection, this sensor was being held on by some Blue RTV silicone sealant like you would use to seal a gasket. Was this the proper method for attaching this sensor? Any ideas on how to make it a bit more permanent? This solution lasted about 10 days driving time.
