Using older 240 wheels on newer 240's 200 1988

We have an '86 245 and an '88 240. Both these cars came with sets of studded snow tires as extras. The problem is that the wheels don't have the holes for the locating pins which, I think, were added in 1986. The PO must never have tried these wheels. I'd like to keep these snow tires and wheels for the rare times we get much snow here in my part of Oregon. Has anyone tried the following: (1) replace the locating pins in the hubs with the flat machine screws used in the earlier models (pre 1986); (2) drilling holes for the locator pins in the old wheels? If so, how did it work out?
