Fuel pump relay and fuel gauge questions 700 1987

Hi,

My turbo 740 fuel pump relay has been bypassed by an auto electrician so that the fuel pump is always powered with the key in the ignition position. I know that the fuel pump relay is normally controlled by the ECU so that the pump is powered whilst the engine is running/starting. Apart from safety (ie. if the car is in an accident and fuel is pumped everywhere etc. etc.), is there any problem with the fuel pump being permanently powered? Could someone direct me to, post, or send me information on the pinout for the relay?

Also, the fuel gauge drops to empty intermittently. Has anyone else had this problem and is it easy to solve (I presume by pulling out the fuel pre-pump assembly out of the top of the fuel tank and spraying the rheostat attached to the float with a cleaning agent). Apart from the safety warnings well documented in the FAQs, are there any other tips anyone would like to give me like perhaps, the voltages I should be seing at the connections at the two wires at the top of the assembly???
