I would question why the mechanic would do this. If the relay is bad replace or repair by resoldering. If fuel and temp guage fail together problem is not in the sender but at the instrument cluster voltage stabilizer or a bad connection. Check sender unit resistance at access hatch in trunk, empty 300 ohms going down to 36 ohms when full.
