lost sound to one channel 700 1988

Hello. I checked the 700/900 FAQ and didn't find any reference to this, so i'm looking for help.

I no longer get much more than a very faint sound from the right (passenger) side speakers in my '88 744. both in the front and rear. the left is fine. i don't play the music loudly so i ruled out the high volume possibly blowing them.

what i'm trying to figure out is whether it's the radio (the original) or the speakers. any advice for troubleshooting steps? i was planning to soon upgrade to a CD player, by the way, so maybe i need new speakers along with it.
