waterpump woes 120-130 1967

Is there any reason a new old stock waterpump would leak after only 600 mi of use on a fresh B20 rebuild? I think it is leaking out the front cone area - it was slinging coolant off the fan blades when running and has since leaked to pump level while parked.

Pump (genuine Volvo) was fine when installed and never developed any squeaks or noises - are there seals in there which might "dry out", or is this a bushing fit type construction?

If I go to replace this pump, is there any easy means of diagnosis why it failed (I've seen 'em cut in half!)?

Also of concern - if I had metal degrading in the engine due to rebuilder error (at bearings), what would be the first part of the engine to give evidence - noises, seal leaks, etc. . . surely not the waterpump?
