Tech Oil Cooler Q's, help a VW guy please?

Hello!

First - I'm a VW guy, haven't been into Volvos (yet). I'd appreciate your assistance in helping answer some questions regarding an oil cooler I bought off a junkyard RWD turbocharged Volvo. Without boring you with too much detail, I want to retrofit the nicely done Volvo cooler onto my '87 16V Scirocco, which uses a factory coolant-oil heat exchanger, and is a PITA.

This is supposed to be a straightforward retrofit. I like the Volvo unit because it's got a 95*C thermostat built into the sandwich adapter. Trouble is, I can blow through either of the fittings freely, like the thermostat is stuck open. Can you tell me whether this is proper, or do I have a bad t'stat? I've removed the circlip holding the assembly into the housing, but haven't got the guts out yet. I'd rather be a little educated before I do.

Also, are different temperature thermostats available for these?

I really do appreciate your allowing me to post here, and I look forward to your help. In exchange, I have a lot of VW rattles, shakes, and vibrations laying around, free to anyone who needs 'em. :)

Ron
