The C.I.S. motor can cause this sort of problem, so can a leaky intake manifold gasket or any other major air leak. I don't think the '81s had the C.I.S.system though. I'd check out the aux. air valve mounted on the side of the head it should be open when cold (sort of a half cresant shape)and closed off when warm.(after about a min or so)If not, rap on the side of the unit lightly and see if it then snaps shut.If it does'nt, check the electrical connector that goes to it to see if you have voltage.If you don't have voltage it is in the wiring, if you do have voltage it is a stuck valve and will require a thurough cleaning with carb cleaner to free it up.
