Shift knob removal 200 86

I need some advice on how to remove the shift knob from my kid's 86 244 with automatic transmission. I need to replace the cover that holds the shifter index (P,R,N,D,L) and need to know how to safely remove this piece. It looks like I need to remove the shifter knob. My Haynes manual is strangely silent on this subjec, though they give detailed instructions on how to remove the shift knob for a manual tranny.
