H2O Temp Gauge Not Good Indicator of Leak? 200 90

Guy called in to local mechanic/car talk radio host with this problem. Water pump was leaking on highway. Water temp gauge stayed normal. Must of smelled it-he stopped right away and had it towed. Water pump replaced along with new valve seals. He then noticed No.3 cylinder making noise and engine burning 2 qts. oil/month.

The mechanic dj says: Yea, this happens all the time. Head is warped, piston rings are heated so much you can bend them into a knot. Get new engine. He claims the temp. sender is typically in top part of engine. When coolant leaks, sender is now in steam/hot air medium. It'll still show normal temp while your engine is cooking.

So me thinks:

Doesn't matter where temp sender is-top or bottom. It will not report engine overheating until too late for top of engine.

So me thinks:

Would a water pressure gauge be the trick to identifying leaking coolant?

So me thinks:

What you guys think?

TIA
