Alternator...or wiring? 200 1980

You guys have been very helpful in the past, here's the latest problem. Many times, when I start my car, I can tell that there is no power getting to accessories...ie. headlights are dim, heater fan slow, dash lights dim, radio barely audible...etc. The engine begins to sputter as though it wants to die, and after a few seconds or maybe a minute, the seatbelt light lights up (no dash indicators though) and no buzzer, and then power is again being delivered. Engine runs fine, and all dim lights are bright etc... Could this be a wiring problem, specifically the red wire attached to the big red wire on the positive terminal of the battery? Am I losing my alternator? Does this happen, do they make trouble before they go? Or do they just go? Please help...Thank you, Mike
