Timing Belt Broke on the Highway 200 1978

Hello Volvo Folks,

My Daughter's 244 timing belt broke on the way to school yesterday. She said it just stopped running. I cranked it over and it sounded like an engine with no compression. The coil would spark once at the beginning of the starter engagement. I felt a floppy belt through the inspection hole on the front of the timing belt cover. I recall the valves do not have an interference problem with the piston at times like these but are there any tricks for resetting the valve timing with piston # 1 @ TDC. Do I have to put a feeler wire into #1 spark plug hole to be sure I am at TDC? Can I turn the cam by hand to get both intake and exhaust valves closed? Are the timing marks reliable for setting the new belt in place once the timing has been compromised like this? Do I have to do anything with the distributor? Is there a FAQ writeup available?
