Won't go in reverse, and the rpm's are too high for the speed I'm going. 200 1981

My Volvo was running fine until recently, when it started to run at higher rpm's than normal. Example the rpm's were at say 4000, for when the car was going only about 30 mph. I don't know if the weather here (Florida) has anything to do with it, or the transmission. Now, as of yesterday, it won't go into reverse! I can shift into that gear (it's an automatic) and the lights come on in the back, but it won't budge. I think the problems might be related. I need some help with this and would like to have an idea about what to do with it. I love my car and it's ran quite well for awhile. Thank you bricksters...
