Old 240s and old Audi 5000s 200 1988

Why was it that my buddy's '88 240 DL gave her absolutely no trouble in the single year she's owned it (it has 145k), whereas my other friend's '86 Audi 5000S kept going back to the shop every week-and I mean every week? I've heard that 5000s from the '80s have a worse reputation than the 240s; that '86 died of transmission failure at only 99k miles.
