740 gle that won't start :) 700 1986

I was recently given an 86 volvo 740 gle, in remarkably good body condition considering its age and use of salt in our province. Besides needing a ball joint, tie rod end and the brakes unseized the car seems to be quite worthy except for the non starting condition :)

Here is my situation.

Car cranks fine.

I get 12 volts on the coil when ignition is turned on, but no spark or pulsation of the coil primary when the car is cranked.

Fuel pump underneath (there are two apparently, one also in tank?) only appears to run when cranking, from reading the faqs here they should run for a second or two when the key is brought into the 'on' position, mine does not. Does the fuel pump running while cranking indicate that the hall effect sensor in the distrib is working? Its bitterly cold and I haven't had a chance to try to diagnose it yet.

I haven't been able to locate a haynes manual yet, as information and parts for these cars seem to be hard to locate in my area. I'm a toyota owner my self, having two supras and I'm completely un familiar with working on volvo's. So any advice would be much appreciated until I can get my hands on a proper repair manual.

Thanks.

Alfred

86 740gle.
