HI all,

OK here goes. My mechanic said that I need a new fuel in tank fuel pump. He also said that I need a fuel pump. My mechanic did a check to see what causes my car to sputter.First he ckecked my timing. He said it was ok. He also did fuel compression test. He said that everything was ok. I have a new fuel filter. I have checked the # 4 fuse which is the fuse for the in tank fuel pump.There was no change in the car's idling when I removed the fuse.I did not here the "whirring" of the in tank or the main fuel pump. I unplugged the Air Mass Meter to see if that was the problem.When I unplugged the meter,the sputters continued.So that told me that my AMM is working. So far this has cost me a couple hundred bucks.Now I talked to a another mechanic from a reputable volvo specialist in the northern suburbs here in Chicago. who said that it could be my AMM but he was not too sure.I would need to drop my car off for yet another diagnostic check. This mechanic said that if it was the just the in tank pump it would be 270.00. He also said that sometimes by the car having so many miles that when they get to the sending unit it could break apart due to worn out parts so I might need to replace the whole sending unit which is 400.00 plus 1.5 hour labor@78.00per. I am confused, tired and almost a depletion of my "VOLVO FUNDS" What else can I do? I do not want to spend all this loot and still have this sputtering. Could it be my AMM? Could it be my in tank fuel pump? I do not think it is my fuel pump because if I had a bad fuel pump my car would not start at all. Somebody correct me if any of this is wrong.
