trouble idling when cold 700 1987

Any help. I am having problems with my 740, It is reluctant to drive when cold. It will stall once or twice then settle down and drive perfectly. I am starting to wonder whether or not it has something with the (low) idle speed. The only hassle with this is the idle speed knob does not appear to work so I am having problems adjusting the idle speed. Any info appreciated,

740GL 1987 212,000 miles still runs like a dream when going!!!!!!!
