Speedometer not functioning 240-260 86

ICQ>

My 86 240 sedan has a broken speedometer. Neither the speedometer nor the odometer work. It looks like there is not a cable from the transmission to the speedometer but rather a wire, which leads me to believe that the speedometer is electric. I am not sure whether it might be a loose wire at the speedometer or if there might be something wrong on the transmission. I assume that if it is electric, that there is some sort of magnet onm the transmission that would send electric current to the speedometer unit. This might not be working. Anyways, the transmission is a low milage used one that was put on recently by a shop. So if anyone might know what might be wrong here, please let me know so I can fix it. Thanks.
