240 Turbo Shock Replacement Clunks Again 240-260 1985

ICQ>

My left front started clunking over bumps, again, early last week. Got worse with time and really clunking on Friday. I say to myself..."what the heck, I've replaced just about every suspension part on this beast"....

So I jump on the front on the car and hear the clunking, mostly on the return stroke of the front shock...hmmm...I can feel the clunk on the shock rod. I jack the car up tear the left front wheel off, lift the rubber boot and WOW HOLY COW, the large center strut retaining "nut" is about 5 turns finger loose!!! Literally unthreaded 4-5 turns. I mean I think I tightened the ig nut with my HUGE channel locks. Am I going crazy?

Anyhow the shock body was very loose in the strut tube. This was the clunk!! So I tighten the heck out of the thing. But (and I do remember this from before) it seems the nut flange bottomed on the top of the tube, instead of on the shock body itself. So even when fully tightened the shock body is not fully clamped in the strut tube.

Of course, as all/most Brickboard 240 Turbo owners I know by now that when replacing Volvo turbo struts I need to use the Volvo spacer. So I did use the spacer and I put it in the right direction. (Only holds the shock up properly in one direction).

So what gives? I don't think the Volvo spacers are tall enough!!

Worst case scenario would be to remove the strut, put another spacer, several washers (somebody mentioned this in the past), or have a new spacer fabbed.

But I really don't want to have to take the damn strut apart again!! Does anyone have any ideas about putting something, (cut washer, epoxy putty, hmm) under the big nut so the force of the nut will hold the shock body down?

For what it's worth the stuts are KYB 4 way adjustables. Maybe they are shorter than other struts......

Steve Seekins? (Your help was mucho appreciated in the past on these clunk issues!)

Has anyone had the large center ring "nut" coming loose??????
