I had a very similar problem at 45-48 mph ('80 245DL)when I turned the wheel a few degrees to the left (following a curve in the road)....bad vibration. Checking the front suspension I noticed the lower ball joints were in pretty bad shape (the tie-rod ends are a little loose too).

Anyway, yesterday I changed the ball joints (used TRW joints from local parts store, $40/ea). The car drives great now...nice and smooth. Its been a long time since its driven this nice. Maybe I'll get to those tie-rod ends someday......Good Luck.
