temperature guage going up 200 1984

While driving home from vacation in my fully loaded 1984 245Ti, the water temp needle

kept moving toward but never reached the red zone. I even ran the heater on the hills for some added cooling.

Should the needle stay solidly in the middle of the guage? What are the remedies available, if this is a problem?

Thanks,

Bill
