Intermittent Starting Problem on 1990 780 turbo 780 1990

The car is a 1990 780 with 137,000 miles. Lately, my daughter had experienced intermittent starting problems. Sometimes it starts fine and sometimes it's hard to start (on various occasions we let the car "rest" and restarted it, and it just started fine). I have been told that it could be due to fuel pump relay, ignition coil, fuel filter. I am no mechanic but I could follow instructions. How could I be definite about a fuel pump relay problem, fuel filter, or ignition coil? Also, where is the fuel pump relay located in this model. I was also told that the ignition coil hardly fails? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
