Mass Air and Temp Gauge 140-160 1986

The Mass Air Flow seems to be inop. Car hard to idle, but when MAF plug pulled it runs ok(at least while the weather is warm) But the Temp gauge goes to H as soon as the key is turned stays there while the car is in motion. Sometimes at a stop light the gauge goes to C. So, can I fix the temp gauge before I shell out the dough for the MAF or is it a combo deal?

Thanks, Kele'
