engine cut out at low speed, now won't start 700 1987

I've just purchased an '87 740 turbo wagon w/172k and am new to Volvos. This morning while idling the engine cut out for a split second a couple of times. I turned it off and back on and drove up the road a couple of miles. At low speed (turning into a driveway), it cut out a couple of times. I checked the air filter and it was pretty dirty. I also sprayed brake clean on a few parts that were dirty including the turbo. I was going to go get an air cleaner and a Haynes manual and now it won't start. After trying to start it several times, I opened the hood and was greeted by a strong gasoline odor. It seems to be coming from the turbo area. According the the PO, the distributor is new. Any ideas? Thanks.
