Larry,

How does the car run otherwise? Red hot exhaust is an indication of it running to lean (not enough fuel). Pull the plugs and see what color they are. They should be a light golden brown. If they are white your engine is running lean. All four plugs "should" be the same color. Does it have an exhaust leak at the manifold? Bad gasket, manifold crack, etc. You may or may not be able to hear the telltale "tick" of a leak.

These are some possibilities, they may be more.
