Re: Factory Boost Setting 700 88

Dear Steve:

Thank you very much for your response. As usual a brilliant answer supporting how tremendously well informed you are. But, quite frankly, now I am even more confused, something that is entirely my fault as I am not ashamed to admit.

Ignoring the "Turbo Plus" system you mentioned, something that came only as a $300.00 factory option and isn't available anymore (if I am informed correctly), I still don't know the factory setting and, consequently, the maximal boost on cars not equipped with the "Turbo Plus" option. You also mention your gauge. I assume you are referring to a calibrated gauge, not the white and red stock instrument, right?

Let me tell you why I think the setting is of utmost importance. "We" tell people all the time they can adjust the turbo boost setting from the conservative factory setting to a more moderate level by shortening the actuating rod for the wastegate-controller. The Haynes manual only refers to the "specified" setting (without giving any specifics!), and mentions that one full turn might increase the boost about 0.4 psi. It seems to be commonly accepted that 12PSI seems to be a setting that can be used safely as long as the engine is fed with premium gasoline. Coming from there, it is certainly important to know if one starts with 7.4 PSI or with any other setting before playing with the rod. Without a calibrated gauge, there is no way of knowing what the actual boost setting is, something that might have fatal consequences for an engine's life.

In your opinion, Steve, what should the not-calibrated stock boost gauge show when running around 12PSI of boost? I assume that most people will not have any reading at or close to the end of the instrument, but I don't know that of course. Also, specifically asked, what boost will a non-Turbo Plus car develop under ideal circumstances if the factory setting is, in fact 7.4 PSI under full throttle at 3000 RPM, as you stated?

Let me finish by thanking you in advance for your qualified advice. Also let me say that I realize how important a calibrated turbo gauge is once one tampers with the turbo boost. A question therefore to everyone: Any good calibrated boost gauges you could recommend?

Thank you!

Bernard
