Re: Replacing exhaust header pipe 200 1989

Greetings Budman, I replaced my header pipe this last spring.

If you don't have access to a lift, simply raise the car

approx. 1.5 to 2.00 feet from the ground. Of course, use ramps

and/or jackstands to support the vehicle for safety. You will

be fully under there. Do not use cinder blocks! Anyway, after

I soaked the nuts to be removed with anti-sieze spray, it was

really easy to remove the old tired unit and install the new

(better double-walled) one. I chose to leave the cat and

everything to the rear of the car attatched.(and obviously,

the exhaust manifold as well) Used new nuts and bolts w/fresh

gaskets and I was done. What a power gain!

When I removed the annoying rattling factory heat shields, I

found that the factory header pipe had two 2" cracks running

along the top of where the two pipes bend from near vertical

to horizontal. Basically a sealed exhaust system like the

factory intended, once again. Sure is a joy to drive now. =)

The main objective to ease the swap, is getting the car high

enough to make clearance for the moving of the header pipe(s).

I used ramps up front and had jackstands in the back. So, the

entire wagon was elevated. Took more time to setup the car and

tools than the job did.

P.S. Oops, forgot about the oxygen sensor. On mine it's on the header

pipe. On yours it may be on the cat. Either way, careful not to damage

the wiring/sensor.
