Warm start problem! 700 89

Yesterday was warm (80F) and sunny. My 89 740 Turbo (142K miles) started nomally. I drove several miles and stopped to pick up a few things. when I got back to the car, it cranked but wouldn't even sputter. I left for about 15 minutes and then tried again. It started right away. I then drove about another 10 miles and made another stop (big mistake). Upon my return to the car, the same thing, crank but not a sputter. I kept trying every 10 to 15 minutes for the next hour. I finally gave up and hitched a ride home. I came back hours later after dark and the car started right up. Anybody have any ideas? HELP!
