Re: Cold Start Injector. Where? How? My book is crap. 200 1979

Richard, A typical cold start injector problem I had on several CIS systems I looked at is malfuction due to the connector on the temp sensor breaking to bits. On CIS the cold start injector has its own circuit that basically consists of power taken of the startermotor solenoid going through a temp sensor screwed in the back end of the engine (near the interioud heater conection) going to the cold start injector.

The idea is that, only if you crank the engine and with a cold engine, the cold start injector is operated. In addition the temp sensor has a heating coil in it that heats it up slowly causing it to cut out after a while preventing the engine from flooding.

Typically the connector to the temp switch breaks to bits preventing power from going to the injector at all. Test is very simple by connecting a lightbulb to the connector that goes to the cold start injector. When you start, the light should go on, if you keep on starting (disconnect ignition) the light should go out after a while. When the engine is warmed up the light should not go on at all when starting.

The injector itself is normally not the problem, they are robust and only used for a few second a day. They could leak, but that gives different results.

Connector is hard to reach btw. My current car is Jetronic LH 3.1 which does not have a cold start valve. I don't know if your car has the cold start valve integrated in the Engine Management System (LH 2.4??) in which case you can still do the test light check, but the fault would not be so obvious to spot and fix.

Reg,
